Sweetheart Neckline vs V-Neck Wedding Dress Necklines for Every Bride
The sweetheart neckline and the V-neck are two popular necklines in bridal, and you’ll find both on gowns across our boutique in Hamilton.
Each frames your face and collarbone in its own way. One does it with a soft double curve, the other with a long, graceful line.
Both are beautiful, so the Bijoux stylist’s have set them side by side to help you picture which one feels most like yours.
The shape of a sweetheart neckline – By Bijoux’s wedding dress stylists
A sweetheart neckline gets its name from the top of a heart, with two soft curves meeting in a gentle dip at the centre.
The curves sit across your collarbone and décolletage and give the bodice a romantic, softly feminine outline.
Designers cut the centre dip at different depths. A semi-sweetheart sits close to a straight line, while a deep sweetheart opens further at the front.
Most sweetheart necklines appear on a strapless dress, and plenty of gowns add straps, sleeves or a sheer illusion neckline above the curve.
Because the curves are designed into the bodice, the shape holds from your first fitting to the last dance.
The shape of a V-neck wedding dress
Two lines run in from the shoulders and meet at a point on the chest, and that point gives a V-neck its V shape at the front.
The point of the V can land high and delicate, just below the collarbone. It can also travel towards the waist in a deep V, which designers often call a plunge or plunging neckline.
Wherever the point lands, the vertical line draws the eye up to your face. It elongates the neck, lengthens the torso and creates the look of a longer neck from every angle.
V-necks come with wide straps, thin straps, sleeves or lace overlays. The shape just looks as at home in simple crepe as it does in richly beaded lace.

Where each neckline draws the eye
Side by side, the clearest difference is the direction your eye travels.
A romantic sweetheart spreads attention across the collarbone and shoulders, whereas an elegant V-neck gathers it into one line that leads straight back to your face.
Fabric changes the mood completely, so a satin sweetheart looks quite different from a lace one, and a crepe V-neck feels different again with beaded straps.
Add the skirt, the sleeves and the silhouette, and each neckline shape takes on a personality all its own.

Straps, sleeves and the bodice
A sweetheart is the classic among strapless necklines, and many designers add thin straps, wide straps or off-the-shoulder sleeves to the same curve.
V-necks often come with straps or sleeves, and one shoulder dresses can carry a V across the bodice just as happily as a sweetheart curve.
Whichever shape you’re drawn to, our stylists will show you gowns with a wide range of straps and sleeves right there on the rail.
Styling a sweetheart neckline or V-neck
Jewellery works with both shapes, from a delicate pendant that echoes the curve of a sweetheart to statement earrings that leave the collarbone open.
A V-neck gives a longer necklace a line to follow, and earrings on their own can look wonderfully polished.
Hair and veils sit happily with both necklines, whether you wear your hair up to show off the neckline or down in soft waves.
If ever stuck, our stylists are always here to help provide some tips to get you feeling at your most confident on your wedding day.
Silhouettes that carry both necklines
Both necklines appear across every major silhouette, from full ballgowns and A-line gowns to column, fit-and-flare and mermaid styles.
The skirt can be as full or as slim as you like, since the neckline sets the mood at the top.
You’ll also find both styles across every designer that Bijoux stocks, perfect if you have your heart on a particular designer.
Other wedding dress necklines and neckline types to explore
If neither shape feels quite like you yet, there are plenty of different necklines to try. The types of necklines in our bridal run well beyond these two.
Clean lines define a square neckline, while a scoop neck follows a soft U-shaped neckline and a bateau neckline runs gently from shoulder to shoulder.
A round neckline sits close to the base of the neck.
A halter neckline wraps around the neck, and a high neck covers the collarbone.
High necklines often come with sleeves, and an illusion neckline adds a sheer layer of tulle or lace over a lower shape, so a high neckline can feel delightfully light.
An off-the-shoulder neckline sits below the shoulders, while a portrait neckline or an asymmetrical neckline lets a wide, sweeping line or a single strap take centre stage.
Our stylists are here to guide you through them all!

Sweetheart neckline and V-neck questions
Are sweetheart and strapless necklines the same?
Sweetheart describes the shape of the top edge, and strapless describes whether the gown has straps, so one wedding dress can be both. A strapless neckline can also be straight or square, which makes it a choice of sweetheart or straight along the top.
Can one wedding dress have a sweetheart neckline and a V-neck?
Yes, some gowns pair a sweetheart bodice with a sheer illusion V above it. Others dip the centre of the sweetheart into a small point for a softer V shape.
How deep can a V-neck go?
A V-neck can sit anywhere from just below the collarbone to a deep V that travels towards the waist. Plunging necklines are designed with support built into the bodice, and our stylists will talk you through how each one is worn.
Are sweetheart and V-neck wedding dresses still in style?
Both are classic shapes that appear in bridal collections season after season, in everything from simple crepe to richly detailed lace. Sweetheart and square necklines both appear alongside V-necks and off-the-shoulder styles in current collections, so the choice comes down to the shape you love.
How much does each neckline show?
Each neckline frames the collarbone and décolletage, and each can be cut shallow, mid-depth or deep. A shallow sweetheart or V keeps the front softly covered, whereas a deeper cut opens it up.
