The most common question we hear from brides preparing for their dress appointment is about underwear.

Here’s what we’d recommend.

Nude or Neutral Bra

A nude or neutral-coloured bra (ideally a strapless one) is going to be your best friend at a bridal appointment.

Most wedding dresses are designed to be worn without visible bra straps, and many have built-in cups or boning that does the work of a bra on the day.

For the appointment itself, a strapless bra in a skin tone close to your own means you can try on strapless, off-the-shoulder, and halter-neck styles while getting the full picture.

If you don’t own a strapless bra, not to worry. A bandeau or a bra with clear straps works too.

We always advise avoiding wearing patterned, or brightly coloured bras.

These can show through many popular fabrics that most wedding dresses are made out of.

Some brides choose to wear shapewear or a bodysuit if they normally would on the day itself, though this isn’t essential at a first appointment.

Or if you are more comfortable bra-free, that is perfectly okay too!

Nude or Seamless Knickers

Nude, seamless knickers are the other essential. Again, the goal is to avoid anything visible through the fabric.

A neutral colour that matches your skin tone works better than white, because pure white can show through ivory and champagne wedding gowns more than you’d expect. Even for the thicker dresses.

Thongs or seamless briefs are ideal because they don’t leave lines through fitted dresses.

Whatever feels comfortable, something you want to wear throughout the appointment, and that stays in place is fine.

If you don’t know what height you’ll choose yet, anything between 2 and 4 inches is a good middle ground.

A light base, eye makeup, and a natural lip colour work perfectly.

If you’ve had a spray tan recently, let it fully develop and set well in advance of your appointment.

For hair, loose waves or a soft updo make it easier to picture yourself in each dress.

You don’t need to arrive looking like you’ve come from a salon, but pulling your hair back when trying on a gown with a high neckline or a statement back helps you see the details properly.

What to Wear to Wedding Dress Shopping (the Outer Layer)

For your own outfit (what you’ll wear in to the appointment and back into afterwards), go for something easy to take on and off.

You’ll be changing in and out of multiple gowns, and by the end of it you will probably just want something comfortable to wear.

A simple top and skirt, a dress, or loose-fitting trousers and a jumper are all better choices than anything with complicated layers or tight fastenings.

You may want to avoid:

• High-necked jumpers or polo necks that are a struggle to pull over your head after your hair is done
• Anything with lots of buttons
• Oversized coats, jumpers or scarves that are a pain to manage in a small fitting room
